Kira is an ancient woodland creature who lives in the alien world of Thra in the 1982 fantasy film the Dark Crystal.
Kira is a kind, gentle and sweet young girl of an unknown age who is a Gelfling by birth and was orphaned at a very young age. Kira survived the Garthim attack organized by the cruel Skeksis to extinct the Gelfling clan as they feared Gelfling would destroy them due to a crucial prophecy that threatened the Skeksis reign.
However, thanks to her mother hiding her infant daughter by placing her into a hollow tree stub just before she was brutally murdered by the fierce Garthim, Kira was unharmed unlike with the rest of the entire Gelfling race. Left to fend for herself, until Kira stumbled upon help and was taken in by the tribe of the friendly little Podlings and raised by her adoptive foster mother Ydra.
Kira was taught by the Podlings and seemingly educated in their ways. Kira then grew into a passionate individual filled with life and compassion. Kira learned how to talk with the flowers and speak the language of all the living things. Kira embraced the essence of life itself and fell in love with the world and appreciated its wondrous beauty.
One day, while accompanied by her pet and sidekick, Fizzgig, Kira's insatiable thirst for adventure is sparked when they stumble upon the last surviving Gelfling boy Jen. At first, the two are astonished with one another as both of them believed that they were the only living Gelfling in existence.
Kira decides to join Jen on his quest and the two of them become friends which later on evolves into something deeper. Jen explains to Kira that his own adoptive clan called the gentle Mystics have sent him away on a great important mission to restore the small broken shard to The Crystal, a very powerful giant Crystal that is inside of the Crystal Palace, which has been long overthrown by the Skeksis. There the Crystal floats, levitating effortlessly above a shaft of air and fire and is used by the Skeksis to rejuvenate themselves to live as immortals.
The shard must be properly inserted back into it's missing place all before the three suns in the sky meet and line together, which will permanently set the lands fate. If not the prophecy is ruined and Skeksis rule and live forever. With the help of Kira, Jen sets out on a dangerous quest to bring their fragile world to its proper order once again as Gelflings are the destined rulers of the land. Thus, ridding evil and fathom from all the land once and for all.
- Unlike male Gelflings, Kira bares a beautiful pair of wings on her back which allows her to fly.
